The figure shown is the minimum premium collected when the policy is issued: your estimated tourists for the year × the rate per person per trip. You then declare names before each trip and the premium is adjusted monthly against the real count — if it exceeds your estimate you are charged more; if it falls below the minimum the insurer does not refund the difference.

What is travel accident insurance for tour operators and guides?

Travel accident insurance for tour operators and guides is an annual group policy covering tourists, guides and tour leaders while they are travelling under the tour company's care. It is the document a licensed operator files when applying for — or renewing — a tour business licence with the Department of Tourism.

Every insurer offers the same core limits: 1,000,000 baht per person for accidental death, dismemberment, loss of sight or total permanent disability, and 500,000 baht per person per trip of accident medical expense. Some plans add food-poisoning medical cover and third-party liability on top.

Premiums are charged per person per trip, starting at 16 baht for a general tour; adventure tours and scuba tours use separate rate tables. Pick your activity type and enter your estimated tourists for the year in the form above to see each insurer's rate and the premium payable when the policy is issued.

Who needs this policy

  • Tour companies applying for a tour business licence for the first time
  • Tour companies renewing an existing licence
  • Guides and tour leaders working under a company
  • Diving, adventure and outdoor tour operators who need cover matched to the activity they actually run
  • Ticket and package agents who do not accompany travellers for the whole trip
How the policy works

It is an annual declaration policy — not a per-trip purchase

StepWhat happens
1Estimate your tourists for the year and pay the minimum premium = headcount × rate per person per trip (insurers require at least 100 people per policy; Chubb requires 200, and MSIG also sets a 5,000 baht floor before tax and duty).
2The insurer issues an annual policy you can file with the Department of Tourism straight away.
3Before every trip, send the insurer the traveller names, dates and destination in writing (email or fax) — MSIG requires this at least one day before departure.
4The premium is adjusted monthly against the real headcount — exceed your estimate and you are charged more.
5If the year ends below the agreed minimum, the insurer reserves the right not to refund the difference.

Important: scuba diving and adventure activities use a different rate table from general tours. Viriyah writes scuba only for businesses whose sole activity is diving (inbound tours only), and MSIG likewise only for diving-only operators — it cannot be combined with other tour types.

Documents required

  • A copy of your tour operator and guide licence (or your company registration certificate if newly formed)
  • A copy of the authorised director’s ID card or passport
  • The insurance application form (we send it to you to sign after payment)
  • Your estimated tourists per year and the type of tour activity

Main exclusions

  • Suicide, self-harm, criminal acts, brawling
  • While under the influence of alcohol or narcotics
  • War, terrorism, riot, nuclear risks
  • While riding or travelling on a motorcycle · dangerous sports outside the plan you bought
  • AXA does not cover travel in Pattani, Yala or Narathiwat, or in sanctioned countries
  • Chubb covers worldwide except Iran, Syria, Cuba, North Korea and North Sudan, and excludes horse or elephant riding, rock climbing, abseiling, rope bridges, overnight trekking, white-water rafting and mountain biking

Full cover details and exclusions are as stated in the policy wording.

Frequently asked

Questions about tour operator insurance

What is travel accident insurance for tour operators and guides?

It is an annual group policy covering tourists, guides and tour leaders while travelling under the tour company's care. It is filed when applying for or renewing a tour business licence with the Department of Tourism.

Who needs this policy?

Tour operators, guides and tour leaders applying for or renewing a licence with the Department of Tourism, including newly registered tour companies, diving and adventure operators, and ticket or package agents.

What does it cover, and for how much?

Every insurer offers the same core limits: 1,000,000 baht per person for accidental death, dismemberment, loss of sight or total permanent disability, and 500,000 baht per person per trip of accident medical expense. Some plans add 100,000 baht of food-poisoning medical cover and 100,000 baht of third-party liability.

What is the minimum number of tourists?

Most insurers require at least 100 people per policy per year. AXA's one-day-per-trip option and every Chubb plan require 200, Viriyah's scuba plan requires 500, and MSIG applies a 5,000 baht minimum premium before tax and duty.

How much is the premium, and how is it calculated?

It is charged per person per trip, starting at 16 baht for a general tour; adventure and scuba tours use separate rate tables. The premium paid at issue is your estimated tourists for the year multiplied by the rate per person per trip, plus stamp duty and VAT.

What if the real number of tourists differs from my estimate?

The insurer adjusts the premium monthly against the actual count. Exceed your estimate and additional premium is charged; if the year ends below the agreed minimum, the insurer reserves the right not to refund the difference.

Does it cover domestic and overseas tours?

Cover follows the type of tour business licence the company holds — domestic, inbound and outbound — except Viriyah's scuba plan, which is written for inbound tours only. Chubb's plans are worldwide (Thailand included) apart from Iran, Syria, Cuba, North Korea and North Sudan.

Are adventure tours and scuba tours covered?

Yes, but on a separate rate table from general tours — pick the activity in the quote form to see the correct rate. Viriyah and MSIG both write scuba only for businesses whose sole activity is diving; it cannot be combined with other tour types.

What documents are required?

A copy of your tour operator and guide licence — or your company registration certificate if newly formed — a signed application form, and your estimated tourists per year with the type of tour activity.

Do I have to declare traveller names for every trip?

Yes — the traveller names, travel dates and destination must be sent to the insurer in writing before each departure. MSIG requires this at least one day before travel.
