Type 3 car insurance is an affordable option for those who want coverage for the unexpected and protect themselves from liability. Type 3 car insurance typically covers:

  • Damage caused to others and their vehicles or property
  • Driver/passenger accident cover
  • Bail bond coverage

Coverage for type 3 car insurance is typically set at 10 million baht sum insured as a standard, which is more than enough coverage for most car accidents.

What's the difference between Type 3 insurance and other types of car insurance?

Type 3 car insurance is a third-party only coverage car insurance. This type of insurance provides coverage for the liable damage you have caused to others or others' property in case of an accident.

Type 1 car insurance offers the most comprehensive coverage, protecting you, your car, and others involved in accidents, regardless of fault.

Type 2+ and 3+ car insurance also provide coverage for your vehicle from vehicle-to-vehicle damage. With 2+ car insurance, you will also be covered for fire and theft.

What's usually covered

All policies differ, but in general, a Type 3 car insurance policy will include cover and compensation for:

  • Third-party liability (up to THB 5,000,000 per occurrence for property damages and up to THB 3,000,000 per person and THB 10,000,000 per occurrence for bodily injuries and loss of life)

How can I get Cheaper Type 3 Car insurance in Thailand?

There are several ways to reduce your premiums for Type 3 Insurance:

Excess or Deductible

Choosing a higher deductible can lower your premium. But make sure you can afford the higher out-of-pocket expense if you need to make a claim.

Garage Repairs

For Type 3 insurance policies, there is only the garage option available. This involves getting your car fixed at one of the networked garages of the insurance company. This option is more cost-effective, as the insurance company has pre-negotiated rates with their networked garages.

Adjusting your coverage levels

Lowering your coverage will also lower your premium. Adjust your coverage to the levels you need but don't go too low - higher coverage with a higher premium often turns out more cost-effective in the long run.

Named Driver

By naming no more than three drivers on your policy, most of the time, you can lower your insurance cost premium.

Maintaining a clean driving record

Having a clean driving record will ensure your renewal premium stays where it is. Some insurers offer no-claims bonuses for accident-free years.

Special Coverage and Additional Extras

While Type 3 insurance doesn't offer as many extras as more comprehensive types, some providers may offer additional coverage options:

24/7 Roadside Assistance cover

This may be available as additional coverage like towing, battery jump-starts, and lockout assistance.

Remember that Type 3 insurance focuses mainly on third-party liability. Additional coverages may be more limited compared to Type 1 or 2+ policies, but these options can help customize your policy to better suit your needs.
